CNN —Somali authorities have declared an emergency after heavy rains triggered floods across the country that have left thousands trapped and many others displaced from their homes. The heavy rain in the East African country follows several years of drought and successive failed rainy seasons that have triggered a humanitarian crisis. Other regions such as Hirshabelle, Puntland, Galmudug and South West have also been badly hit by the deadly floods, according to the UN agency. South West and Jubaland states are the worst hit by the floods, with over 200,000 people affected in each state, according to OCHA. The agency added that in Puntland, heavy rains and floods destroyed a camp for internally displaced people and cut off electricity and internet connections in the state’s north Gaalkacyo neighborhood.

BUEA, Cameroon (Reuters) - Armed militants stopped cars, shot at passengers and set vehicles on fire during an attack on a village in Anglophone Cameroon's South West region on Thursday, residents and a Reuters reporter said. New York CNN —A Canadian farmer owes $82,000 for breach of contract after using a “thumbs-up” emoji in a text. After phone calls with farmers Bob and Chris Achter, SWT drafted a contract for Chris Achter to sell SWT 86 metric tons of flax for $17 a bushel and deliver the flax in November. He said the only difference this time was Achter responded with a “thumbs-up” emoji instead of “ok”, “yup” or “looks good.”According to Achter in the court documents, he confirmed “the thumbs-up emoji simply confirmed that I received the Flax contract. It was not a confirmation that I agreed with the terms of the Flax Contract. In my opinion, when considering all of the circumstances that meant approval of the flax contract and not simply that he had received the contract and was going to think about it.

A Canadian judge ruled that a thumbs-up emoji sent by phone represented a binding legal agreement. The case involved a grain seller replying to a sent contract with a thumbs-up, but then not delivering. The judge said Canada has to be ready to "meet the new challenges" that may arise from emoji usage. Chris Achter responded with a thumbs-up emoji, which Mickleborough interpreted as Achter entering into the contract, according to the legal documents. The company said the thumbs-up emoji only indicated that Achter had received the message, not that he had agreed to the contract, Achter said in an affidavit.

OTTAWA, July 7 (Reuters) - A Canadian farmer has been ordered to pay more than C$82,000 ($61,784) in damages over an emoji confusion that a Saskatchewan judge resolved by ruling that a thumbs-up image is enough to accept contractual terms. Chris Achter, the owner of a farming company in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, had sent a thumbs-up emoji in response to a photograph of a flax-buying contract sent to him by a grains buyer in 2021. Months later, when the time of the delivery arrived, the buyer - which had been doing business with Achter for several years - did not receive the flax. "In my opinion the signature requirement was met by the thumbs-up emoji originating from Chris and his unique cell phone," Keene said. At least 78 people died when the fishing vessel flipped and capsized in international waters south-west of Greece early on Wednesday. A migrant charity says a person they were in contact with on the boat said it was in distress, but Greek authorities say it repeatedly refused offers of help. Passengers paid $4,500 for passage to Italy, the two Greek sources said. Aerial photos of the vessel taken by the Greek coastguard hours before the tragedy unfolded showed a vessel crammed with people on its exposed decks. When the boat reported engine failure and stalled, a coastguard vessel shadowing them came closer.

Sick of sewage, Britons protest at water companies' pollution
  + stars: | 2023-05-20 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
To the beat of a drumming band and waving placards, the protestors called on Britain’s water companies to do more to prevent sewage discharges. "We are sick of this sewage and they need to take action," Izzy Ross, Surfers Against Sewage's campaign manager told Reuters. Public anger has been fuelled by the payment of dividends to investors and large salaries and bonuses to water industry executives. Campaigners say water companies are discharging much more often than they should, including when there has been no rain. On Thursday, Water UK, the trade body representing the UK water industry, apologised, said the public was right to be upset, and said more should have been done to address the issue of spillages sooner.

[1/4] People wait to watch Britain's King Charles' procession to his coronation ceremony from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey, at The Mall in London, Britain May 6, 2023. From the early hours, people dressed in red, white and blue and clutching union flags lined the streets to watch the crowning of King Charles, the first coronation in Britain for 70 years that will be marked by a vast display of pomp and pageantry. But polls show the public generally approves of Charles as king and a majority still support the monarchy, even if younger people are far less interested. By 7 a.m. (0600 GMT) crowds on the grand Mall boulevard leading up to Buckingham Palace were 20-deep in places, with many wearing paper crowns and waving flags. "I think regardless of his age the king will reach out to younger people, I think he'll be more connected to the youth than the queen," he said.

We were walking a stretch of England’s South West Coast Path when my wife and I stopped to marvel at the cliffs plummeting to the Atlantic, and the ancient stone wall that snaked alongside us. In a couple of hours we would come to a village, stop for soup and pints of beer, and keep on walking. There wasn’t anything in the world we’d rather be doing, we agreed right there, than walking that path that skirted the sea. Nothing gives simple joy and satisfaction like walking. A long stroll over days or weeks can reveal a world and a self you didn’t know existed.
Among methods that produce what is known as green hydrogen are electrolysis to split water into hydrogen and oxygen using power from renewables. The technology for shipping hydrogen is still in early stages of development, said Chevron's vice president of hydrogen Austin Knight. About 30-35% of the total energy system will need hydrogen to decarbonize, he said. NextEra is working with the U.S. Treasury on rules that govern what can be considered green hydrogen, he said. The process is complicated by the variability of renewable power supply from wind and solar, he said.

Etheridge told SWNS that she "ignored" her pain for months because she didn't know cancer could cause it. Generally, people are diagnosed with ovarian cancer after menopause and it's rare in people younger than 40 to develop the disease, according to the American Cancer Society. "I don't think young women know the symptoms of ovarian cancer," she said. Chemotherapy was 'brutal'Treatment of ovarian cancer depends on the type of cancer and how far it has spread, but includes chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and surgery.
